1. Financial Accountant (Paid, 2 days a week, based in Sydney/Taronga Zoo)

We are seeking a detail-oriented and committed part-time (2 days per week, timing flexible) accountant to contribute to the growth of the organisation, and be responsible for ensuring that all financial transactions are correctly and accurately recorded in the organisation’s general ledger, including execution of regular and timely reporting, reconciliation and substantiation procedures. 

The Financial Accountant will be responsible for the organisation’s profit and loss statement and balance sheet, including the management of the finance systems.  The role will work very closely with the Treasurer, CEO and other members of the JGIA team however, this position is the only financial representative on the JGIA staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all transaction processing functions and reconciliation processes, including application of a month end/year end timetable  
  • Process expenses, payroll, and other day-to-day accounting activities
  • Ensure the organisation is compliant with applicable taxes, (GST, other indirect taxes) and regulatory requirements, and transactions are recorded in accordance with Australian accounting standards
  • Provide requisite management reporting and analysis in relation to the key financial areas of the organisation
  • Prepare the annual financial statements, and management of the year-end audit process
  • Manage the finance system (Xero), including structures and relevant processes, ensuring an efficient long term sustainable outcome

Skills and Experience

  • Professional accounting body qualifications
  • Experience in financial management / reporting, and preparation of annual financial statements.
  • Knowledge and experience in financial reporting systems
  • Demonstrable experience in understanding business and financial impacts of operational decisions.
  • A ‘can do’ attitude and enthusiasm for working in a team
  • Excellent attention to detail 
  • A personal interest in animal welfare, environmental conservation and community education and action
  • A commitment to achieving results

2. Roots & Shoots State Coordinators (NT, ACT, TAS) and Assistant State Coordinators (Australia-wide)-Voluntary

About the Role(s)

As a R&S State Coordinator and Assistant State Coordinators you will be working as part of a team with other passionate, volunteer, state-based R&S coordinators, the national coordinator, CEO and other staff and volunteers. You will be playing a pivotal part in the growth of this inspiring organisation. 

You, and your team, will manage a range of tasks including promoting R&S across your state, supporting R&S groups and individuals, building and coordinating a team of volunteers, engaging and supporting youth leaders and forming partnerships with other organisations. You will also have the opportunity to provide input and assist in the development of our events, social media, campaigns and resources. To be successful you will be dedicated, organised and compassionate. You will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, experience working with youth and an alignment with the values of JGIA.

Position description:

To be successful in this role you must: In this role you will be required to:
  • Be willing and able to commit 20 hours per month to the role
  • Have experience working with youth or children
  • Have exceptional communication skills
  • Be comfortable preparing and delivering presentations
  • Identify new members, activities and fundraising opportunities
  • Bring your expertise to raise awareness for existing programs
  • Computer literate
  • Willing to assist in developing resources for R&S
  • Respond to emails within 48 hours
  • Have a current drivers license and reliable transport
  • Have current Police and WWC clearance (or be willing to obtain)
  • Manage all R&S activities within your State
  • Promote R&S to individuals and groups (e.g. schools, universities)
  • Identify and approach potential R&S members
  • Regularly (4+ times/year) visit all active schools
  • Form a team of capable and like-minded representatives
  • Support and implement events including State R&S conference
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner organisations
  • Stock and sell merchandise
  • Attend a minimum of 75% of online meetings

3. Roots & Shoots Area Supervisor (Voluntary)

About the Role

We are seeking passionate volunteers to join our R&S team to help drive the growth of R&S.

The Area Supervisor will reside and operate in the designated country areas as part of the state team and under the guidance of the State Coordinator. The role will be to establish, monitor and assist Roots & Shoots groups in the designated area.

We are looking for help in the following locations

NSW  Newcastle and Dubbo
VIC   Bendigo and Gippsland
WA  Karratha and Kalgoorlie

Specifically, responsibilites will include:

  • Be willing to commit up to 10 hours a month to the program
  • Actively promote Roots & Shoots to schools and groups that may be interested in Roots & Shoots
  • Have some experience in working with youth in the 6 to 20 age group
  • Be able to build a small team of volunteers to assist in managing the program
  • Be comfortable in preparing and delivering visual presentations to various age groups
  • Respond to emails within 48 hours
  • Have current police and working with children clearances
  • Be available for monthly Zoom of Skype hookups with the State Coordinator

4. Various Volunteering Opportunities

JGIA and Roots & Shoots are growing and could use your energy, passion, and skills!!

Admin Help (Sydney): min2-3 hours a week. Come join the JGIA team at our offices at the Taronga Zoo, Sydney. Help return emails, fulfil our shop orders, file things, enter data or whatever is needed at the time. 

Writers wanted (flexible): We are looking for a team of writers to help us create content about Jane, Chimpanzees, Roots & Shoots, conservation and other JGIA/R&S core areas. Would you like to help us with one of our campaigns?

Phone support (location flexible): Are you comfortable on the phone? Can you help make calls to our donors and volunteers to thank them for their support? 

Website support (location flexible): min2-3 hours a week. Are you familiar with WordPress? Do you know how to update websites? Do you know how to post blogs? We could use some backend support.

Google AdWords (location flexible): 2-3 hours a month. We have just activated our Google AdWords account and need help to create, post, manage and optimise our Google AdWords account.
