Did you know that October 4 was World Animal Day? We know that like us, you probably love to celebrate animals everyday, but sometimes we ask ourselves what more we can do to help our furry, feathery and scaly friends. One easy step is to stop taking animal selfies and encourage our friends and family to do so the same. While they can seem very cute, they also encourage animal cruelty and suffering as we learned in this article from the Guardian. It’s a heartbreaking story, and one that we know that you will help us share far and wide.
Another thing we can do for our animal friends is to fight for tougher protections for endangered species. According to the IUCN Red List, right here in Australia, we have 96 critically endangered animals and another 176 endangered species, not to mention of course chimpanzees. We were buoyed this week when a UN-backed wildlife conference held in the Philippines voted for additional protections for a list of 33 endangered species including chimpanzees, leopards and giraffes. We all need to do our part and tell our government officials and leaders that they need to act too. Keep your eyes on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages for how you can help us speak up on their behalf.
