Elwood Outback Girls Hiking for JGIA

We’re so pleased to share this story about six girls and their mums who are heading off on an adventure to raise funds for JGIA! Tilly, Eva, Ella, Grace, Mia and Nellie, who are in grade 5 at Elwood Primary School in Victoria, are travelling to Schusters Lodge in the Victorian high country on October 6th where they will meet with Senior Ranger, Nigel Watts, to talk about the hike and local ecosystem. They’ll start their hike on early Saturday morning along the Howqua River and high track towards Gardeners Hut, and finally reach the Eight Mile camping site. Howqua Hills is in the valley below Mt Buller where the ski season is still going strong and the hike will include many wonderful views of Mt Buller and the surrounding mountains. It is a beautiful walk and they’ll be taking a few detours along the way including the old mining tunnel at Tunnel Spur and a few dips in the river (it will be cold!). They’ll camp at Eight Mile that night and in the morning, head back to Schusters Lodge along a slightly different route. In total, the girls will hike for 25 kilometres, all to raise funds for wonderful work that we do at JGIA and Roots & Shoots Australia.

The girls are keen to raise the money for the orphaned chimps cared for by JGI, and they are thrilled to be taking part in something that will make a difference in their lives. They were inspired by Jane’s message when they saw her speak in Melbourne in June. The girls originally set out to raise $2700 and thanks to generous friends and family, and a successful baking effort for two successive market stalls in St. Kilda, they have already raised nearly $3000! If you would like to support this fantastic effort, please visit their fundraising page. Thank you and well done girls (and mums) and we can’t wait to post on our R&S Project Page all about your hike on your return!
