October Newsletter 2014

1. The Gadhimai Festival

In 2009, approximately 250,000 farm animals were inhumanely sacrificed during Nepal’s Gadhimai Festival. This horrific event occurs every 5 years, with funding from the government, and will be held again this November. We’re calling on all our friends and members to support the work of our colleagues at the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal. Join the Global Action Movement and raise your voice for the animals of Nepal.  Click here to find out more.

2. Emergency Appeal – Last 2 Days

Chimp Eden Sanctuary in South Africa provides long-term care for 34 rescued chimpanzees. Nikki and Amadeus, victims of the bush meat trade, were rescued in 1996. As a result of unfortunate circumstances, they are endangered for the second time due an incident of aggression. We need an escape-proof enclosure to ensure the safety of Nikki and Amadeus as well as staff of the sanctuary.  If we do not build the required sanctuary, both chimpanzees will face euthanasia.  The global emergency appeal aims to raise $250,000 by the end of the year to build a safe, escape-proof enclosure and upgrade the existing enclosures in the sanctuary. JGI Australia is helping by directing 100% of all online donations (excluding memberships and Chimp Guardian donations) received in October, to Chimp Eden. You can watch Jane Goodall’s video message here and follow the story on their Facebook page.

Please help Nikki and Amadeus by making a tax deductible donation before the end of October here.

3. Roots & Shoots Project of the Month

Roots & Shoots members in Victoria helped Sea Shepherd Conservation Society by collecting kitchen provisions for the ships which are soon heading back to the Southern Ocean to patrol for illegal poaching activities. On October 24, Roots & Shoots members were thanked by members of the Sea Shepherd crew with a special tour of the Steve Irwin which is docked in Melbourne.  Thank you to everyone who collected provisions, donated provisions and met at the Steve Irwin to show support.

4. Gombe Street View

In partnership with Google Maps, Google Earth Outreach and Tanzania National Parks, JGI is pleased to announce the launch of Gombe Street View, a new and exciting way to explore the same forests and trails that Dr. Jane Goodall explored in her studies of the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park.  Click here to start exploring.

5. A Message from Paul Smith, Interim Chair

JGIA is delighted to announce that five outstanding individuals will be joining our board of directors in November. With a blend of governance expertise, strategic thinking and a passion for animals, people and the environment, we believe they will complement the current organisation and enhance our ability to deliver positive impact and real change in the world.
