National Mobile Recycling Campaign

They're Calling on You national mobile recycling campaign was launched by Dr Jane Goodall in October 2008 at Melbourne Zoo. This campaign has been running in Victoria for almost 6 months, and it has proved to be so successful, involving not only zoo visitors but many parts of the general community - schools, universities, businesses, families and other environmental groups.

To date Melbourne Zoo has collected 4,000 mobile phones.

Mobile phones contain Coltan - an ore that is illegally mined in the DRCongo with devastating effects on gorillas and many other endangered animals. Click here to learn more about Coltan.

With the new national body connecting all Zoos and aquariums in Australasia, The Australasian Regional Association of Zoo's Parks and Aquaria (ARAZPA) have made it their national campaign for 2009 to support the initiatives set by the World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA) as well as the United Nations.

On March 23 2009 at the ARAZPA National Conference at Sea World the national campaign was launched.  Click here for the press release and photos.

Monies raised will assist the Zoos conservation initiatives with primates as well as support an in-situ program in the Democratic Republic of Congo coordinated by the Jane Goodall Institute and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI).
