Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary is once again proud to be a part of Planet Ark's National Tree Day and is calling on Mitchell Shire residents to get involved on Sunday, 31 July 2011.

“We are encouraging residents to make a positive difference and become a part of Australia's biggest community tree planting and nature care event” said Edgar's Mission founder and tree day co-ordinator, Pam Ahern. “It’s easy, fun and a small investment of time for great environmental and community benefits.”

Since National Tree Day began in 1996, more than 2.5 million volunteers have planted 16 million native trees, shrubs and grasses.  This year, people across the country will attend thousands of official tree planting and land care activities organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers.

“Since becoming involved in National Tree Day almost 2,000 trees have been planted here at Edgar's Mission.  It is wonderful to see and feel the enormous sense of pride amongst the volunteers who really enjoy improving our sanctuary, not to mention meeting our wonderful animal ambassadors.  Many returning each year to check on the trees they have lovingly planted in previous years”

This year the sanctuary plans to plant 300 native trees and shrubs as well as tending to those planted in previous years.  Registration starts at 10.30am with planting commencing at 11.00am.  Those wishing to attend are advised to wear warm waterproof clothes and appropriate footwear and bring gloves if they have them.

National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in partnership with Toyota and its Dealer network, which provides on the ground support at local community tree planting sites Australia wide.

Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary is home to over 250 rescued farm animals and is nestled in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at Willowmavin, via Kilmore.  Edgar's Mission is a proud member of Roots and Shoots, an environmental and humanitarian education program of the Jane Goodall Institute.
