Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots

What is Roots & Shoots?

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is a global network of young people empowered and inspired to take action to improve our world. It is a youth-led community action and service-learning program that is currently making a difference in over 130 countries.

It builds on Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy and vision of placing the power and responsibility for creating community-based solutions to big challenges in the hands of the young people. All around the world today, young people from kindergarten to university are exploring problems in their communities around animals, people and the environment, brainstorming solutions and creating projects that help to solve the problems.

Roots & Shoots in Australia:

Roots & Shoots is a program that is different for each and every member around the world. As it is in such a diverse range of countries and communities, projects vary widely. For instance, a project that works for inner city kids in America is going to differ enormously from one which is implemented in remote towns in Uganda or one in coastal communities in Australia. As a result of this diversity, we allow our members to develop their own projects based on what they’re most passionate about and the issues they believe need to be addressed, either locally or globally. Members across Australia are currently engaging in projects that address animals, people, or the environment.

Why Join?

One of our main goals is to support young people in becoming strong advocates and leaders in the areas that they are most passionate about. Our members receive the following:

  • A detailed Resource Kit that contains information on our networks, our four primary campaigns, fundraising tips, and more.
  • Access to our national and global networks of like-minded young people helping to create a better world
  • Information on all upcoming opportunities for young leaders, including the chance to develop skills, attend events and network
  • Ongoing, tailored support and mentoring throughout all stages of undertaking Roots & Shoots activities
  • Connections with organisations and leaders in the cause that you are interested in

How can I get involved?

In Australia, we offer both Individual and Group Membership, and its completely free! Individual Membership is for young people under the age of 26, who are determined to make a difference and take action in creating a better world. Group Membership is for community leaders, teachers, parents or students who wish to gather and support a group of people to undertake projects. To register as an Individual visit www.janegoodall.org.au/individuals, or to register as a Group head to www.janegoodall.org.au/start-a-roots-shoots-group. As soon as you’ve signed up we will support you in finding your place in the Roots & Shoots Australia community. As a member of the Federation of Environment and Horticulture in the Macedon Ranges, which also involves our local wildlife network, I would like to enquire about joining the Roots and Shoots Program to help educate and encourage the younger people in our community,
Could you please send me any information you feel I may need to present to our members and committee to further this project and partnership
    yours sincerely
